Why Up to a Quarter of Your ACA Clients May Not Renew This Year
Mike Smith President Emeritus of The Brokerage Inc. lays out what's driving the drop, and what you can offer instead.
A quarter of your ACA book could go uninsured this year, not because clients stopped caring about coverage, but because the math finally broke. Mike Smith President Emeritus of The Brokerage Inc. traces it to two things landing at once: base premiums climbed right as enhanced subsidies disappeared, and higher deductibles and co-insurance closed off whatever room clients had left to absorb it. This isn't about politics, it's a healthcare cost problem, plain and simple, sitting right there in the premium numbers clients are already staring at.
For clients whose ACA coverage no longer fits their budget, there are real alternatives worth knowing:
Short-term duration plans: available from four months up to three years depending on the state, often running 40 to 50% less than an ACA plan, though they involve some underwriting and can result in a decline
Health care sharing ministries: a lower-cost option some clients are turning to, though they typically require belonging to a specific faith and may exclude certain kinds of care
Group health plans with an HSA: for clients who own or work for a business, pairing a high-deductible plan with a health savings account lets the employer contribute on a tax-favored basis while the employee builds savings they control
Individual coverage health reimbursement arrangements (ICHRA): lets an employer reimburse premiums and eligible expenses without funding a traditional group plan
When a client doesn't know where to start, Mike Smith's advice is straightforward: call a local, licensed insurance agent, at no cost and no obligation, who already knows what's available in that client's state.
