Symetra's Automatic Upgrade Program Returns for Year-End
Symetra's Automatic Upgrade Program Gives Agents More Room to Compete Through Year-End
Symetra has opened a limited-time window for agents to secure stronger underwriting offers on eligible indexed universal life cases — without any extra steps required on the application. Now through December 31, 2026, qualifying Symetra Protector IUL and Accumulator Ascent IUL cases will automatically be considered for an underwriting upgrade of up to three rate classes, giving agents partnered with The Brokerage Inc. a meaningful opportunity to put more competitive offers in front of clients before the year closes out.
How the Upgrade Works
There's nothing additional to request or submit. Eligible applications are automatically considered for the upgrade as part of Symetra's normal underwriting process — agents simply apply as usual. The rate class improvement is applied before any GoodLife Reward wellness credits, meaning clients may see even stronger final offers once those credits are factored in.
The two products carry different upgrade ceilings:
Symetra Protector IUL — eligible for up to a two-class upgrade (Standard → Standard Plus → Preferred), available through issue age 60 and up to $5 million in coverage.
Symetra Accumulator Ascent IUL — eligible for up to a three-class upgrade (Standard → Standard Plus → Preferred → Super Preferred), available through issue age 60 and up to $10 million in coverage.
Who Qualifies
The program casts a wide net. Eligible cases include:
High-net-worth foreign national and domestic applicants (foreign nationals residing in a "C" country are excluded from this program)
Nicotine and non-nicotine applicants in standard or better rate classes
Both full and accelerated underwriting paths
Both formal and informal applications
It's worth noting that each insured may only be considered under one product during the program period — either Accumulator Ascent IUL or Protector IUL, not both — and maximum coverage may be reduced based on existing in-force coverage the client already holds with Symetra. In-force policies are not eligible for the upgrade, and backdating to save age is not permitted.
Deadlines Agents Need on Their Calendar Now
Because this program is tied to a hard year-end cutoff, timing matters more than usual. To take advantage of the upgrade:
Informal applications must be submitted by December 11, 2026
Formal applications must be received by December 18, 2026
All policies must be issued, paid, and placed in force by December 31, 2026
Given underwriting timelines, agents with cases that could benefit from this program should start the conversation with clients well ahead of these dates rather than waiting until the deadlines approach. Symetra has also indicated it will proactively revisit pending cases approved on or after June 1, 2026, that aren't yet in force, and will notify agents directly of any rate class improvements identified — but for new business, moving early gives the underwriting process the room it needs.
Why This Matters for Your Clients
A rate class upgrade can directly affect what a client pays for the same amount of coverage, which makes this a practical opportunity to revisit cases that may have stalled on pricing, or to bring Symetra into conversations where it wasn't previously the most competitive option. For high-net-worth clients, foreign national applicants, and cases involving nicotine use, this program widens the field of opportunities worth a second look before year-end.
