Mutual of Omaha: Fewer Med Supp Declines

A modified offer at an adjusted premium, instead of a decline, for clients who don't qualify for standard rates

You've had clients you wanted to move to a Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement plan, and their health history meant a flat decline. In 18 states, some of those clients may now get an offer instead.

Since August 28, Mutual of Omaha has offered a tiered-rating program for all of its Medicare Supplement plans in 18 states. When medical underwriting applies but an application isn't fully declined, Mutual of Omaha can extend a modified offer of coverage at an adjusted premium, which may help you reach clients who were previously declined.

How Class Rating Is Determined

According to Mutual of Omaha's Medicare Supplement Underwriting Guidelines, class rating only applies to medically underwritten applications, and it factors into two categories:

  • Height and weight: These can be calculated at the time of application using the applicant's stated height and weight and Mutual of Omaha's height and weight chart.

  • Medical underwriting class rating: This can't be determined at the time of application. It's assessed after Mutual of Omaha reviews the applicant's medical history and underwriting information, and the applicant may be offered coverage at an adjusted premium or declined under underwriting standards.

Class rating isn't available in every state, so check the state-specific Outline of Coverage to confirm it applies where your client lives.
